The Bessie Smith Cultural Center

Vision planning for organizational development and expansion
• Community engagement and new stakeholder cultivation
• Outreach for more diverse and representative constituents
• Comprehensive strategic framework
Chattanooga, Tennessee is celebrating a renaissance of economic development and growth. Situated in what was once the center of Chattanoogas African American community, the Bessie Smith Cultural Center sought a new Vision Framework to guide strategic planning efforts to enable this landmark institution to adapt to the citys changing landscape and thrive as a key cultural asset well into the future.
The Bessie engaged CJAM Consulting to structure and manage the Vision Framework planning. CJAM structured a process that included informational site visits for board     members to aspirational cultural institutions located in nearby cities of Atlanta, Georgia and Birmingham, Alabama. The CJAM process also featured facilitated board discussions, community dialogues and in-depth engagement with artists, local stakeholders, funders and elected officials. The resulting framework plan offered the organization a sense of possibility and a set of action steps to set the stage for strategic planning efforts to follow.
